Road Rules for LSV Golf Carts
The term LSV refers to low speed vehicles which meet certain qualifications to be classified as such. In some destinations, LSV golf carts are permitted for use on public access roads under certain limitations and after satisfying certain conditions. If you’re planning on purchasing an LSV golf cart, you should become familiar with the road regulations in your area to prevent any unwanted run-ins with police or traffic authorities.
Etto Leisure Cars of North Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Pleasant, Summerville & Charleston, SC know the importance of our customers being informed about proper driving guidelines. These guidelines are based on the South Carolina Code of Laws and will prevent you from committing any infractions with your cart.
SECTION 56-2-100 of chapter 2, article 1 of the law states that LSV golf carts can only operate on highways with a posted speed limit of 35mph or less. An LSV may also cross a highway at any intersections where the highway has a posted speed limit of more than 35mph. Your golf cart will also need to meet the requirements listed in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 and have all the safety equipment listed in this standard. In certain territories you will need to make adjustments to your golf cart for it to be considered an LSV and fall under LSV regulations. Be sure to consult with the laws in your state before making any upgrades to your vehicle.
You will also need a permit if you intend on operating your LSV golf cart on public streets or highways. Permit applicants can obtain a permit decal and registration by providing proof of ownership and liability insurance for their cart to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) along with a $5.00 fee. Permits allow drivers to operate an LSV golf cart during daylight hours only and to operate within four miles of the address on their registration certificates. This also allows access to roads within four miles of a point of ingress or egress to a gated community or within four miles of the registration holder's address. Permit holders may also operate on an island not accessible by a bridge designed for use by automobiles. Road rules for LSV golf carts in SC also dictate that drivers be at least sixteen and have their registration certificates, proof of liability insurance, and driver’s license on hand.
Title requirements for LSV golf carts entail that the manufacturer’s or importer’s certificate of origin must clearly identify your vehicle as an LSV and that your vehicle was manufactured in compliance with the equipment requirements for low speed vehicles. An LSV should also be registered in the same fashion as a passenger vehicle pursuant to this title and must adhere to the insurance requirements applicable to other motor vehicles under this title.
