Road Rules for LSV Golf Carts

According to SECTION 56-2-100 of chapter 2, article 1, LSV golf carts are allowed to operate on highways with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. An LSV can also cross a highway at intersections where the speed limit is more than 35mph. 

Your golf cart must meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500, which includes specific safety equipment. Depending on your location, you may need to modify your golf cart to meet these standards. Always check the local laws before making any changes to your vehicle.

Permits

Permits allow you to drive your LSV golf cart during daylight hours and within four miles of the address on your registration certificate. This also includes roads within four miles of an entry or exit point to a gated community or within four miles of the registration holder's address. Permit holders can also operate on islands not accessible by bridges designed for automobiles. 

South Carolina road rules also require drivers to be at least sixteen years old and to carry their registration certificate, proof of insurance, and driver’s license at all times while operating the vehicle. This ensures that all operators are accountable and that their vehicles can be easily identified in case of any incidents or traffic stops.

Other Requirements

For your LSV golf cart to be titled, the manufacturer’s or importer’s certificate of origin must clearly identify the vehicle as an LSV and state that it complies with the equipment requirements for low-speed vehicles. An LSV must be registered in the same way as a passenger vehicle and must have insurance coverage that meets the requirements for other motor vehicles.
